WAIKATO.
The Alexandra correspondent of the New Zealand Herald, writing under date 17th August, says that Tawhaio bad withdrawn his demand as to the release of the three Maori prisoners taken at Ngaruawahia, and the law is to take its course as regards their trial. The Herald, of the 20th inst., thus comments upon the latest news': — Te Kooti still remains in the neighborhood of our Waikato settlements, a day'B march only from Alexandra. So long as this is the position of affairs it behoves the authorities to relax nothing of their vigilance. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, and to preserve the peace of Waikato there can be no better plan than to show ourselves ready and prepared for war if need be.
