Napier Brass Baot>.—The first annhersary of the formation of the Napier Brass Band will, we are informed, be celebrated by a ball and supper, to be given on September Ist.
The English Mail, vid Suez, it will be seen by a Post-office Notice, closes this day at 11 a.m. at the Chief Post Office, and at 11.30 a.m. at the office, Port Ahuriri. Napier Militia. —The following appointments appear in the New Zealand Gazette : —Henry Hamilt n Bridge to be ensign; date of commission, 24th June,' 1869. Thomas Kennedy Newton to be ensign ; date of commission, 24th July, 1869.
Marvels op Modern Travel.— The completion of the railway from New York to San Francisco brings New Zealand within 37 days of England. Wellington is only 21 days' steaming from San Francisco; the transit overland occupies six' days, and will probably be reduced to five; and New York is ten days from Liveipool.
