Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1869. MR.FOX'S POLICY.
A cardinal point in the policy of the new Ministry is, as we are informed, to seek Imperial aid in men, —the regiment now here, and another to be specially raised for New Zealand service. It was a most .severe blow to that policy for its propounder to learn, almost immediately after the words had gone forth, that it had collapsed; that, in fact, the whole Ground had been cut away from under him by a new and distinct declaration from the Colonial office, —one, too, that admits of no parley,—and which clares that the regiment now here is to be removed forthwith, and that no change of Ministry would make the slighest difference in this respect, as the Home Government had taken up a position which they were resolved to maintain at all hazards. It was perfectly true that this was well known and understood by the late Ministry, whose arrangements were made accordingly ; but Mr Fox and the two gentlemen who decided to. work v\ itli him either could not or would not believe it; and their policy was so contrived that it should rest on the probability of reversing the decision of the Colonial office. What will become of that policy now that its foundation is destroyed, it is hard to.say.
