Appointments.—Mr John Ballantine, has been appointed teacher for the Clive School; Mrs Hertzell for the Porangahau School; and Miss M'Kinnon for the Port School. The General Assembly was opened on Tuesday last by Commission. The address in reply (on which some imagined the Stafford Government would go out) was carded almost without opposition Returning Officers.—Thomas Richardson, Esq., Petane, and F. Serlgwick Abbott, Esq., Te Aute, have been appointed Returning Officers for ihe election of members of the Provincial Council of the Province of Hawke's Ray. Exportation of Live Stock, Wool, &c.—We note the folio win exports at the Port of Napier for the month ending 31st May :—Cattle, 124 head ; sheep, 1,100; pigs, 42; wool, 1,758 bales and 110 qrbales; tallow, 1 cask; preserved meat, 5 cases and 6 casks. Importation of Grain, &c. ---The following have been the importations of grain, & , at the port of Napier, (hiring the month ending 31st May : —Oats, 1,374 bags, wheat, 300 bags; oatmeal, 65 bags; bran, 20 bags; barlev, 350 bigs; potatoes, 90 bags ; flour, 1,445 bags.
A False Report —lt having been currently reported in Hawke's Bay that Colonel Whitmore had resigned his com mission as commander of the Colonial Forces, we are enabled to give such report an unqualified denial. Colonel Whitmore is at present suffering from ill-health, but has not ceased to perform his duties, and has no intention of gning them up. The Artesian Well.—Notwithstanding an unfortunate bend which has taken place in the tube, and which, though slight, has proved sufficient to check somewhat the process of sinking, good progress continues to be made, and appearances are promising. Yesterday afternoon, nearly 180 feet ha I been driven, and some rotten wood had been encountered. We trust that we shall be able to announce water very shortly.
