Despatches from Fort Galatea, on the Rangataiki river, dated May 11, were received in Napier on Saturday forenoon. The communications between Fort Galatea and Ahikereru, a distance of 22 miles, were all right Colonel "Whitmore, after leaving a strong garrison of 350 men in Ahikereru pa, had advanced on Ruatahuna. His advanced guard of 20 men had had a skirmish with the rebeh*, losing 1 native killed and 2 Europeans wounded. The weather was very fine for the season; no snow, and but little rain; rivers low. There were plenty of supplies at Fort Galatea. Capt. Moorsom's men wore employed in packing- provisions and ammunition to Ahikereru. There is good feed for the horses around Fort Galatea, which is strongly situated and garrisoned by about 60 men. The place could be rushed only from one side, and it is defended by ditches, banks, and manuka fences.
