Hawkes Bay Times. Nullius addidus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1869. THE EAST COAST CAMPAIGN.
The despatches we publish this moraine show that Colonel Whitmore is making real progress in the difficult work before him, and are an evidence of the adaptability of the trained for. ces under his command to execute all that is required of them. "We notice with regret that the Native Contingent at Wairoa have again failed at the critical moment. The work which our own people are ready to perform offers too much discomfort to the natives, who are afraid of the cold and wet, and they choose to garrison the township rather than take the field. This is but another instance of the folly of employing natives in the work. A few hundred more of our own race, trained as Colonel Whitmore's men are, who could be depended on and guided, would, we are convinced, be of more value than the whole of these na tives, who too often are found to fail when their services are most required.
