THE EAST COAST.
The following appeared in the Wellington Independent of the 17th: instant:—
Napier, April 15> 3.11 p.nfc Colonel Lambert writes yesterday« from Mohaka; eneniy moved off on Monday afternoon, up Mohaka valley,. His scouts were seen yesterday morning up the valley. Cannot arrive at exact number of enemy,-*-thicks about 150, besides women and children. Th& women were clearing out Hudson's stores with pack-horses. The Blockhouse i 3 saved. Lavin and his wife are missing, their three children are dead. Cooper is missing, and an old man dead—seven in all dead or missing. Natives assert Te Kooti is. dead; shot by Heta, the man who would not give up his rifle. There is a story about the Hauhaus taking the body out to sea for burial, and firing a volley. The natives in the little pa opened the gate on the promise of their lives; Kooti got in, rubbed noses, and gave money. There have been killed, as near as I can learn, twentysix natives. All the houses are burnt.. Paul Toki was there, not Te Waru. The large pa held out. No clear act count of what ammunition they got, bnt think not more than two kega and a half. Some was buried. Twelve Hauhau bodies have been seen. The attack on the large pa must have been, feeble, as the pa is large, and there were not above thirteen or fourteen men in all the place. Kooti after all has not done himself much good. He has lost a number of men, and got little loot except from Hudson. 3.52 p.m. Karatiana, a Patea chief, says Williams' statement substantial!} correct. That Williams was not there himself. News reached Karaitiana in a letter on Friday last. Kainga (not a pa) surprised, and about 50 inmates taken prisoners. Name of kainga, Warewerawira. Hapuku,. Renata, and other chiefs in conference with Deputy Superintendent, W. R. Russell has established efficient patrol from his company towards, the Repio road. 16th, 9 a.m. Tie report of Te Kooti being shot is still believed. Found the bodies of Lavin and wife,, and Cooper, and thirty-one frieudliea up the valley. The Mohaka militia are placed on* pay, and are garrisoning the blockhouse. Captains Tanner and Towgood, with all militia and volunteers (Napier corps), march for Napier today. The .Armed Constabulary are. retained here for tho present. The bodies of Layiu and his wife were found in the scrub, his arm was about her; they appeared to have died from gunshot wounds received in> flight. No bayonet or other wounds. Lavin had his revolver by his side, and his wife had money, watch, and beads, in her pocket. The children, had six bayonet wounds.
