Mounted Constabulary for Hawke’s Bay. —Colonel Whitmore has despatched a force of 60 mounted constabulary for Hawke’s Bay, under Lieut. Richardson. They will for the present be stationed near the Titioknra Gorge. They were at Turakina on Sunday last. They had lost two men—Thomas Jones and Henry Weston —who were drowned in crossing the Wanganui River. The party may be expected to arrive at the Ruataniwha end of the Fortymile Bush by Saturday next, unless delayed by bad weather or other cause. We understand that they will proceed across the country direct to Titioknra. Our Telegrams. — We seldom think it worth our while to notice the insinuations constantly thrown out by our local contemporary ; but there is one in his last issue that demands attention, as it in effect amounts to a charge against us of falsehood and of manipulating telegrams. It seems strange that with all the knowledge our contemporary professes to have of the secrets ot the Telegraph office, he should not know the genuineness of the one in question, Who our “ occasional correspondent” is, is exactly what our contemporary does not know; but we may state that he is an honorable man and in no way connected with the Government. That it came through other hands to us we distinctly deny; and if it will be any satisfaction, to our contemporary to see the telegram itself, we shall be willing to oblige him. |
