Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1869 THE EAST COAST.

It is pleasant to be able once more to write that the news from the outlying districts is more satisfactory and reassuring than it has been for some time past. Te Kooti seems to have retreated to the Uriwera country, and to be lying perdu for the time. The Hawke’s Bay natives have come home from their expedition, and several outlying settlers have returned to their stations and resumed their occupations, while scouts are on the watch for any untoward indication on the part of the rebels. The fact of the Hawke’s Bay natives returning at a time when supplies were being forwarded to them, speaks volumes for their opinion of the state of affairs; and we do trust that the worst is over.

It must not be supposed that we would advise any relaxation of effort to destroy the rebels, nor of watchfulness on the part of those exposed to dangei. While Te Kooti is alive and at large we may at any time hear of his movements against some of our fellow-settlers ; and this alone enforces the need of circumspection. But with the scouts already appointed, and those now on their way from the West Coast, we think due notice will be obtained of any such intention on his part, and this will remove much of the anxiety which has hitherto been felt from the absence of such organisation.
