THE HAWKE’S BAY HERALD AND COLWHITMORE.

To the Editor of the HawJce's Bay Times.

S JB} —ln the Hawke's Bay Herald, of the 9th March, appeal's the followin o- sentence :—"But until "Waikato crosses our northern frontier, and invests the homestead of a certain distinguished officer (which might happen at any hour), we have little hope that anything will be done." Ap-ain, in its issue of the 13th inst., the Herald says:—"Mr M'Lean had the moral courage to act as he did [prevent Bopata and his men from proceeding to the West Coast], and thus to defeat for the time the machinations of those who would sacrifice one part of the Colony for the aggrandisement of a particular omcerm the Colonial service."

Many of the unthinking people in this Province are, I fear, led away by such personalities. It is not so, T trust, with those who despise such at+acks and look beyond.local quarrels and personal interests. At this time, what is good for the Colony is good for the Province. The continued attacks upon the officer who is ay the present moment at the head of the Colonial army, face to. face with the foe, is beneath Englishmen, His' bravery and energy is both seen and felt; but what and whom are hi* enemies ? No doubt they, or most of them, will live to regret the part they have taken against a public sen ant, who, no doubt, has his faults—(have they none?) Sir, " while the Gaul is thundering at the gate" they should rather rush and go shoulder to shoulder with him to close it; and if they did more for the real good of the public and less for their own grasping schemes to possess themselves of the fat lands of the Province, would be far better public servants lhan they are. I ask the people of this Province to look to the fact that our native neighbor are rapidly parting "'ith their lands, To whom ] To men who have much to do with the Government of thin Province,— Yours, &c, Observer, Napier, March 13, 1869.
