Lieut.-Col. Lambert returned on Monday last from Wairoa, having made arrangements to prevent a surprise in that quarter. It is to be hoped that he vT 'ill have time to attend to the training and organization of the Militia, which is all we have at present to depend on for the protection of Hawke's Bay, The Mounted Constabulary,— This corps is now in course of being recruited for service in this Province. The Lieut.-Colonel enrols good men only. They are well remunerated for their services—the pay being £2 9s per week, wet or dry, and unless when in the field their duties are of a very light nature. A capital opportunity is now afforded to young men of an enterprising disposition, for such, if ot the ri ht stamp, may be sure of obtaining commissions in the force. Steady sobriety, dash, : and a due attention to duty will not fail to meet the reward of advancement. The English Mail will leave Napier on Thursday next.
