LONDON WOOL REPORT.

We take the following from a report dated 2nd January :

The fourth and last series of wool sales for the past year commenced on November 26, having been postponed a week on account of the general elections.

The quantity catalogued up to to-day is 120,531 bales. Of these, 87,042 arrived since last sales; 5,000 bales (Cape wool) were held over for the March sales; the residue, 38,489 bales were withdrawn from previous sales. There was a good attendance of home buyers at the commencement, an unusually large number of buyers from France were pvesent. The prices realised showed an advance of Id per lb. on good Australian and New Zealand wool, and id to Id per lb advance on second and snow-white Cape wools. The sales progressed at these rates uniformly until the last week, when a much firmer tone wa,s evinced, and the sales closed with great spirit. An advance on the opening rates was obtained in many instances. From the steady consumption of the raw material now going on both in England and on the Continent, it is evident a restoration of confidence is taking place. Port Phillip, New Zealand, and Van , Diemen's Land comprised a larger assortment this season than usual owing to wool held over; but as shown by the prices obtained, they were principally middle class wools. All such aa were adapted for combing purposes were keenly competed for, and realised an advance of fully Id. The best descriptions of greasy and scoured also commanded a corresponding improvement in price.
