I The man Murphy, who has been arrested at Taranaki on the suspicion oi complicity with the recent murders at the fVliito Cliffs, deserted from the 57th Regt. ibout three years ago, and has been living ifith the Maoris ever since. A short time igo, whilst crossing a fen-y, he made some itrtmge remarks about something that vould happen shortly ; no attention was )aid to it at the time, hut he afterwards epeated it, and when news of the massacre :auie it was remembered, and he was irrested. From the Independent, Feb. 25, fre take the following:— The Tabanaki Deputation.—A deputation consisting of the Superintendent of Taranaki and Messrs Hi st and Dingle waited upon the Government yesterday morning and were i< formed that it would be impoßßible to retain the detachment of the li'th Kegiment, as orders had been given by General Chute for removal to Auckland. Ministers explained the acticn Jhey had taken in the matter, at which the deputation expressed their satisfaction, and on retiring thanked the Government for the energy they had displaced for the protection of their province.
