THE LATE PUBLIC MEETING.
To the Editor of the Hawked Bay Times.
Sir, — I see in this day’s Hera3<j some very spiteful remarks about tt 6 meeting called on the previous daj to take into consideration the Edu. cation rate. Your contemporai} says ; “We learned, from seeing on Sunday morning, our premia plastered over with smudged pieces of colored paper ” —meaning, I supi pose, the well-printed handbills y which the meeting was called, Th| Committee, not, having funds at then disposal to print large placards, and not wishing to go to. the expense o! having their work done at the “Go vernment Printing Office,” had small handbills printed and circulated; and that these fully answered their ol> ject was shown by the fact of then being over £OQ persons present al the meeting. As regards the meeting being cod vened anonymously, the Committei just followed the example of a nunij her of Napier gentlemen who a shorj time ago called a meeting to considel the suspension of the constitution! —(By the by, wbat has become cl the memorial passed at that meeting! Perhaps it is “suspended” in thl Council Chamber, or in your cqj| temporary’s office.) The requisition calling this meeting was drawn ii| last November, and signed by ovel 100 Napier householders. | Fair Play, | Napier, Feb. 16, 1869. I
