WELLINGTON.
By the 8.9. Wellington, which arrived yesterday, we have our usual Wellington files ; but the limited space at our disposal prevents us from making any extracts in this issue. Ilia Excellency the Governor returned to Wellington from the South on Thursday in H.M.'s b.s. Challenger. The remains of the gallant Major Yon Tempsky were recovered by Col. M'Donnell last week, whilst making a raid on Te Ngutuoteinanu. The Colonel found the fortified position quite deserted, and after burying the bodies of the other men who were killed with Von Tempsky, and destroying the whares and cultivations, returned to Patea and Wanganui, bringing in some 1G horses, and, as we have said, what there was left of the mortal romains of poor Yon Temsky. These will be forwarded to Wellington for burial. The following promotions appear in the New Zealand Gazette : —ln the Armed Constabulary: Acting Sub-Inspector Montagu Stopford to be Sub-Inspector. Thos. William Porter to be Acting Sub-Inspector. John Henry Herbert St. John, and Major James Eraser to be Lieut.-Colonels. With the exception of Major Fraser's, (dated 6th Jan.), the above commissions date from the sth Jan., the day on which Ngatapa was taken.
