A NUISANCE.

To the Editor of the EavjMs Bay Times. Sir, —I trust that no apology will be necessary in bringing before your notice a subject in which yourself, as well as all other residents in this part of Napier are deeply, I might say vitally, interested. I allude to that piece of stagnant water extending above the causeway from opposite the weighbridge to the coal and timber yard of Mi LeQuesne. You have, I believe, in past seasons referred to the necessity of this crying nuisance being abated, and it is gratifying to find that some of the owners of the property have done their part towards filling up the pond, but the others do not seem in any hurry to finish it, and I must suggest that the local Government be called on to compel them to abate the nuisance, which has become intolerable to all who reside in the neighborhood. Previously to the filliug-in operations this pond used to rise and fall with each tide, and was thus kept from total stagnation ; but this tidal action has since been checked, if not entirely stopped, the consequence of which is that each day's heat accelerates the process of decomposition there trains on, and it is to be feared that the miasma will not fail to produce its natural effect before the summer is over, in the production of some malignant fever or other evil, the responsibility of which will in a great measure rest upon the heads ot the owners of the said property, and on that of the Government which permits such a danger to exist. Surely, Surely, sir, there is an Inspector of nuisances, or some person whose duty it is to look after such matters as the above. —I am. <fec,

A Spit. Resident and the Father of a Family. Eastern Spit, Jan. 22.
