THE HAWKE'S BAY PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

To the Editor of the Hawke"s Bay Timet. Sir,-—I notice in the issue of your contemporary of Tuesday last an advertisement of Dr. Hatchings', soliciting co-operative assistance for the purpoHw of again starting into active existence the Hawke's Bay Philharmonic Society. I heartily commend him for this praiseworthy undertaking, which, however, I consider a rather difficult one at the present stage of the Society's progress, considering that the last concert, specially got up after a lapse of inactivity, expressly for the above good purpose, has tended, unfortunately, rather to a dissolution than to a firmer reunion amongst its performing members. The Society, by all accounts, too, appears to be in pecuniary, as well as other difficulties. The last concert, got up for the further purpose of liquidating the "old debt," resulted, through untoward circumstances (not want of accommodation for an audience), in placing them more deeply in debt than they previously were. Tin*, of course, was disheartening to the performers generally, after their united endeavors —devoting their time and talent, one might say, to no purpose. I wish the present undertaking, with all its difficulties, ultimate success under the able management of the gentlemen who are proposed; but hope the future programmes of the Society will contain somewhat moie popular music, as music of such high classical character as Beethoven's and Mozart's doesn't seem to "take" with our fastidious Colonial audiences—perhaps owing to the tame style in which it is rendered when compared with Crystal Palace performances.—T am, &c, Obeo. Napier, Jan. 20, 1869.
