POVERTY BAY.
Since our issue of Monday, the s.s. Ahuriri and the p.s. Sturt have arrived from Poverty Bay, the former on Monday morning and the latter early yesterday afternoon. The Ahuriri brought the wounded men, and took a number of the Armed Constabulary (about 120) on to Wellington. The Sturt brought 140 more, and Col. Whitmore, Major Fraser, &c. The officers and men did not land, and the Sturt almost immediately resumed her voyage to Wellington. Major St. John, with about 120 men, is at present at Turanga, but .will very shortly leave. The settlers have resumed their ordinary avocations. The latest news is that 20 more men had been captured and shot by Ropata, and about the same number of women had been taken. It is supposed that of the large numbers who occupied ISTgatapa, not more than 20 can be at large. The total number of dead Hauhaus found, exclusive of the last 20, was 136, and, from the nature of the country, there are likely many undiscovered. Onboard the Sturt were one of Te Kooti's wives, and a sister of Nikora, a Hawke's Bay Hauhau, who was killed at Ngatapa.
The men have all the utmost confidence in Colonel Whitmore, and are elated by their late successes. Captain Brown .is much regretted by No. 7 Company. We have heard one of thorn, an old soldier who had fought at Alma and Inkerman, say that he had never known a captain in the army, or elsewhere, at the same time so able and so universally popular.

There are also in the Hospital the following men belonging to the Forces who were not among the wounded : —Harry Hope, A.C., simple fracture of the thigh, caused by his horse falling on him, and William Barsdall, sick. In addition to these there are some who were wounded in earlier engagements. Thomas Lake, who was shot through the head, has gone to Auckland ; but Eruera, another of Gascoigne's scouts, who was shot through the lungs, is still at the hospital. The total number of patients at present is fourteen, Contributions of old linen or cotton rags will be thankfully received at the hospital, where they are much required for dressing the wounds of the patients,

He was severely injured ; bub expects to be able to resume his work in a few days.
