Manslaughter in Canterbury.— The Lyttelton Times gives particulars of the shooting of a man at Cragieburu on the 2th h October. Tne deceased’s name was •John Levil), anti lie was an Irishman. He called at the Craigiburn Station about noon, and seeing the head shepherd, asked lor employment, lie was informed that none could be given, when he requested to be supplied with “tucker.” The shepherd replied that tncy were short of meat, but the cook would give him some flour. Deceased said that would be of no use to him, and he must have bread and meat. On appiving to the cook, he was refused the latter, and fold nothing but flour could be given him. lie then went away, but returned in about ten minutes, and told the cook ne must give him meat, or, having a dog, lie would catch a sheep and kill it for himself. The shepherd called to him not to make a row, but to go away quietly. The cook went into the kitchen and took down a gun, saying lie would shoot him if he oliered to go inside. Deceased at once ran into the kitchen, and, seizing the gun, the two struggled together. \\ hoist doing so the two barrels went oiT successively, the first charge lodging in the inside of deceased's thigh, and the second in his right side. The latter tore all the skin away, leaving the lungs exposed, and death took place the same uigut. The police were sent for, and the cook, whose name is Thomas Peppered, was taken Into custody. The Sergeant of Police and his prisoner bays arrived in Lyttelton, and the body of the unfortunate man was also brought down at the same time.
