Local Memoranda.
Rifle Volttnteees. —The usual monthly parade will take place at 7 a.m, on Saturday next
Maggie. —This brig is announced $o leave for Sydney direct—on or about Monday next. Ahueibi. —Tbia steamer may be expected to arrive here from Southern Ports in a day or two. The exact date is not known.
Customs Revenue. —The amount of revenue collected at H.M.'s Customs, at the Port of Napier, from the Ist to the 6tb Juno amounted to £303 10s lOd.
Bat of Tslaitds Coal. —The schooners Donald M‘Lean and Huntress, may be shortly expected to arrive with cargoes of Bay of Islands coal. This coal is now universally used in Auckland.
We understand that the Napier Rifle Volunteers will be required to repair to the parade ground, in full uniform, directly the steamer with his Excellency the Governor is signalled.
Telegraphic communication is now established between Napier and Waipukurau. In our Council report will be found a congratulatory message from H. R. Russell, Esq., to his Honor the Superintendent.
Off to the Diggings. —About a dozen “birds of passage” took their departure for Kennedy’s Bay in the Betsy on Tueslast. We bear that many more are likely soon to go and do likewise.
Peesentation. —We learn that Mr A. H. Blake, No. 2 Company Napier Militia, will bo presented with the medal for the District Prize Firing, immediately after the Governor’s levee.
Stab of the South. —We are glad to be in a position to announce that the s.s. Star of the South is ence more to bo placed in the trade between this port and the northern capital, and trust her owners will find sufficient encouragement to continue reuning. The steamer is a general favorite in these parts, and her courteous commander has won the esteem and respect of all who know him.
Public Meeting. —A numerously attended meeting was held last evening'in Mr S. Begg’s store, Eastern Spit, for the purpose of considering the advisability >f forming a Volunteer Corps for the Spit. A. Kennedy, Esq., was called to the chair. The following resolutions were unanimously carried Proposed by Mr Rich, seconded by Mr Trask, “That the corps bo a Volunteer Artillery Corps.” Proposed by Mr Cresswell, seconded by Mr Charles, “ That the corps be named the Napier Volunteer Artillery.” Proposed by Mr Stables, seconded by M r Charles, “That Mr A. Kennedy be elected Captain of the Napier Volunteer Artillery." Proposed by Mr Cresswell, seconded by Mr Janisch, “ That Mr J. M. Tabnteau, be elected First-Lieutenant.” Proposed by Mr. Spiller, seeonded by Mr Rich, “ That Mr W. Eoutledge be elected Second-Lieat. enant,” Mr F. W. Gamer was elected Secretary pro tern. Thirty-one gentlemen gave in their names as being willing to join the corps. The object is most commendable, and we trust the new corps will live and flourish. We have been requested to announce that any person wishjing to join the Napier Artillery Corps can jdo so by giving in their names to Mr F. jW, Garner, Secretary pro ten.
