ill!; NATIVE DISTURBANCES AT IIOKIANGA. By the arrival of the schooner Taujrauga from the Bay of Islands yesterjday we have later intelligence of the | native disturbances at Hokianga. | Several skirmishes have taken place between the Rarawaa and the Hikutu section cl the Ngapuhi tribe, in one of which, on the 10th or 11th instant, three of the former were badly wounded, and one of the latter—a young man from the Waimate—is missing since the fight. In a second skirmish which had taken place at au earlier period, one man belonging to the Chief Mohi Tawhia’s tribe, was shot through the back. The ball lias since been extracted, and the sufferer (a half-caste), is likely to recover. A few hours before the Tauranga sailed from the Bay a report was prevalent that the Hokianga postmanhad brought intelligence of another fierce contest between two tribes, during which the murderer (Te Weka, of the Rarawas.) had been killed, and of Mohi Tawhia’s ; tribe dangerously wounded. ■ We may state, however, that the report is not ' believed by the settlers at Russell, and |we ourselves do not place much faith in it. A gentleman who arrived by i the Tauranga informs us that the natives feel disgusted at the Government letting the murderer escape, and are anxiously waiting to hear what steps 'are to be taken. Before many days. : however, a fight between the two tribes .appears imminent, unless the GovernTuent undertake to bring Te Weka tc justice.—New Zealand Herald, May 18. [With reference to the above, wc quote as follows from the Southern Cross of the 23rd May :—“ As oui correspondent surmised, the report from Hokianga that Te Weka, the mur derer, had been killed by Te Rongo, t was ‘too good to be true .’ The only ; ‘person hurt, that we know of as yet Its Te Rongo himself.”]
