This case, referred to ia our issue .of I Monday last, was heard before the EesiJ dent Magistrate, C. C. Bowen. Eeq., on ‘Saturday and Monday, the 7th and Sth inst. The prisoner, H. Monagan, was charged with stabbing G. T. Frisby. The evidence of the plaintiff, (who lay in a dangerous state), was taken at the hospital. Tt appeared that whi’e plaintiff was drinking at the Glasgow Arms, with two other men, a woman he had known as a child at iiome camp in, lie had some conversation with her, and the three saw her home afe her request. At her house they found a man lying in bed who seemed annoyed at his h.lng with the woman, and he was about leaving, but the woman came to the lorn- and had some further conversation with him, asking him as he was about to go home, to see her friends, &c., the pri« soner became more and more annoyed at it, and he was again about going, but was still detained in conversation by the woman. Prisoner then came out with a knife, and making a strike at him knocked his cap off; plaintiff hit back two or three blows, and then received the stab. The woman said that she had been deserted by her husband, and had been living for the last nine months with the prisoner, she was followed home by the three men, who brought some drink into her house. The prisoner and she also partook of the drink (old tom), with the men, and she went to both After this she heard u scuffle, the prisoner ordering Frisby away, and ho refusing to go, as ho said he had as muck right there as prisoner. Sho went out and spoke to plaintiff, and prisoner called her in. and threatened her, which caused more words, and the fighting before described. Plaintiff was taken to the hospital and his wound attended to. Prisoner was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Plaintiff is likely to recover. HESTER HOSKINS. In (ho Police Court, on the 9th March, Hester Hoskins, was sent to tho Lunatic Asylum for safe custody. The Resident Magistrate remarked that a copy of her statement had been sent to England, and that actipn would be taken.on tho information received. FALSE REPORT. A telegram was received in Christchurch on the Idt inst., stating that a party of Fenians have pulled down the office of the West Coast Times, at Hokitika, in consequence, it is said, of a certain article appearing in that journal some days ago. This was contradicted next day.
