Artesian Well. —We understand that another attempt is about to be made to boro an artesian well within the Town of Napier. English Wails. —The Panama Co.’s s.s. Lord Ashley is duo here on Sunday next, ;;‘Jth March, with the English Mails via Suez and Panama. Should the Auckland portion of the Panama mail bo on board, the Ashley will steam northwards the same day ; otherwise, she will not leave until the following day. The Ahuriri, which arrived here on Thursday last from Wellington, did not, as was expected she would, bring any telegrams of English news. Brr.GLAKT AT WaIPUKHUAU. — Amm named William Richardson was, on. Friday last, at Waipukurau, before G. S. Cooper, Esq., R.M., charged with having broken into Mr Drower’s store, and stolen a sum of money, on the night of Tuesday. It appeared that Mr Grower had fur some time missed money and goods from his store, aud on Wednesday morning missed a larger fam than usual. Suspicion fell on the prisoner from the quantity of money be was spending that day. He was searched, and his tekare examined. In his possession was found a rupee, which was identified by Mr Grower as having been in his till at the lime of the robber* 7 ; and concealed in a sack within a few yards of his dwelling was found a large selection of new goods, consisting partly of rugs, Crimean shirts, dresses, boots, and a binocular telescope. The trade labels had been removed from the goods. It appears that the prisoner had gained access to the store at nights by moans of a sash insecurely fastened by a nail, and that he had carefully replaced the nail after committing his depredations. He made no statement in defence, merely asserting his innocence ; but before the hearing of the ease he made a desperate attempt to escape. He was committed for trial at the next criminal sittings of the Circuit Court at Napiers
Excursion Tickets. —ThcN.Z.S.N. Co., in order to give folks an o; portunity cf visiting the northern city dn - ing the period of the visit of His Roved Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, has adopted the plan of issuing return tickets, available for six weeks by any of the Company’s steamers. Several persons availed themselves of the opportunity of the Almriri’s departure for Auckland on .Friday ai'ternoonj and we doubt not that had the intention been made known at an earlier date, others would have done tho same. However there will be further opportunities for those so inclined. Tlie lares from and to Napier have been reduced lor the occasion to £S for salmon, arm Ao lor lOre-eaOiii passages. Mr. Colexso’s Lecture.—We were triad to observe a very full attendance at the lecture given on F,i lay evening in the Council Chamber, hy Willi ■nn Coleuso,j Esq., on the earl-, history of New Zealand. The lengthened opportunities of acquiring the requisite information and tho wellknown ability of Mr Colenso, had raised expectation to somewhat of a high pitch, which was amply realised in tho execution, exciting, as it did, profound interest to the end. The lecture was the second of a proposed course in connection with the Napier Mutual Improvement Society, and wo trust that others will shortly follow. Tho chair on this occasion was occupied hy Mr II R. Holder, Capt. Curling being prevented from fuhlliing his engagement by indisposition.
Shocking Accident —Wo regret to have to record the occurrence of an accident of a very painful character in Shakespeareroad on Saturday afternoon last. The particulars of the case are hrioily as ink low:—On the day in question, a little boy named Robert Whilis, aged about 10 years, Hi the employ of Messrs. Torr & Co., lemonade and soda water manufacturers, was engaged driving the horse connected with the machine (which works on the principle of a Ihrcsning machine), when he dropped his whip, which, coming in contact with tho piston rod, became entangled round it; and on tho little fedow jumping down from .his seat and endeavoring to regain jdio whip, the sleeve of his coat unfortunately caught one of the screw bolts which fasten the rod to the cap. tan, by which his right arm was dragged under, and carried twice round the rod before the hurse could be stopped, and was literally crushed; and, had not the machine been stopped when it was, liis whole body would most probably have shared the same fate. Medical attenda re was immediately sought lor, but a full hour e;.:ps;-d before such w procured. 1- n-.d’v, a messenger found Dr. t'pencor, 2-1' ih Regiment, who request*. .1 mat Willis should be immediately ream l ■ d to the Provincial Hospital, where, shortly afterwards, the painful operation of amputation w:>s performed on the poor boy, to whom ciilori -form hud previously been administered, —his arm Ling taken o;V el esc d> the sb iiikhr. At the time „f the accident, th i)jy h m very little blood indeed; and, in answer to enquiries, replied in a voice that was scarcely audible from exhaust! nn that he fit no p.-aa. However, he is a vv:y sdjit built, delicate-locking lad, and the chuck caused to Ids system must have been great From enquiries made at (he hospital yesterday, we are gh.d to report that the little suilercr is progr. ssiug as favorably as might have been expected under die circumstances, though he still lies in a d ingerous state.
WAiPncuRAU Races, IboS St Patrick’s Day (Tuesday, 17lh Marc!:) win ushered in with beautiful weather, and numbers of people from town, as vvell as the surrounding com.try, took advantage of lire opportunity of a holiday to go and see the rae, s” at Waipukurau. ns well as to have a whiff of fresh country air, and to enjoy the scenic beauties for which the interior of Hawke’s Pay is noted. The races, notwithstanding many untoward circumstances, passed olf as smoothly as could be desired. The attendance on the course is estimated to have been about 300. The course was in splendid condition, forming a wonderful 'contrast to the one at Menace. V* o give a brief report of the several events: —Free Handicap, 1 mile, OiLmdowon this race, with Nu:ua second, although it was quite oc.ious to all that the latter could have had it all his own way had it been necessary. Warren Hastings, ridden by young -Mahoney, came in third; the journey up to Waipukurau seemed to have been too much for him. Much regret was expressed at Mr Powdrell’s Black Hoy being drawn, as, had he gone for this event, the result might have been very different Hack Mace, 1 mile. Zoo won as she liked, beating Gumboy and another Scurry Stakes, 1 mile. Pour horses bad been entered for this race, but only three came to the post. P>othOrhnido (Erench) and Numa (Donald Taylor) went away at a killing pace, it evidently being the intention of their icspcolive jockeys to cut Black Boy down, but the Napier horse proved too much for the Northern cracks, and won by a length aud a limf, hard held. Numa was second. We congratulate Mr Powdrell on sustaining, in a sportmg point of view, the credit of the Province wit la Black Boy ; next year, no doubt, barring accidents, he will run even a better race Hack Race, j miie. Gum boy won easily, defeating three others. Zee was not allowed to start.... Consolation Handicap, 1 mile. Only two horses started —Numa and Brother to Glengarry. The two kept well together for some time, Nlira a being ultimately landed an easy winner. ... Settling took place at the Tavistock Hotel at 6 o’clock on Tuesday evening, and everything passed off satisfactorily. Thus terminated tiie Waipukurau Race Meeting for IS6S. Had more judgment been displayed in the time of holding the same, no doubt it would have passed olf more successfully than it did.
