From a telegram in the Canterbury Times, we learn that the object of Mr M'L-an’s visit to Wellington was to arrange preliminaries for native gatherings to welcome the Duke of Edinburgh. Naukow Escape fkom Deowxixg.— Mr James Hague, well known in sporting 'circles, bad a narrow escape from being jdrcwned at Wairoa on the I4tb inst. He ■was crossing the Turiroa creek, on horse-, jbaek. and when about half wav across the animal, for some reason or other, would not swim an inch further, and began to rear up. Mr Hague very prudently jumped off, and struck out for shore, which, after great Hitßeuhr, he happily succeeded in reaching. He had knee boots on at the time, which getting filled with water, made swimming rather hard work. Tun Duke of Edinburgh left Melbourne for Hobart Town on Saturday, 4:h Jan., m big steam frigate the Galatea.
