Whatever may Lave been true of the Avant of education in some of the strjvar.ts of the General Government in rimes past, it seems that it is to be s no more, for in the same Gazette a? that to which we have referred in the foregoing arCc’i', we f;tul that an educational status wiii in future he insisted on iu every candidate for Government employ iu the Civil Sen ice. Every such candidate, before he can be noiui mated as a probationer, must pass a satisfactory examination in English Grammar. Orthography, Composition, Writing, and Arithmetic, including Fractions vulgar and decimal, besides mother in two additional branches of education, winch the candidate will he permitted to select for himself from a given list of seven, as follows : Lal>n, French, Geometry, Algebra, English History, Political Economy, and Geography. It is true that but little beyond a mere elementary knowlege of these latter subjects is demanded, but the fmt of their being required a! ill shows that the Government, has a? length become able to appreciate the value of a good education on the part of its servants; and w’e are led to hope that measures will be taken to place the means of eclucatu n within the reach of all, otherwise we think some difficulty will be experienced in procuring, at Government rates, the necessary supply of educated candidates for the Civil Service.
