NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.
(From the Daily Southern Cross, 28th Sept.) Our Tauranga correspondent writes that he can see no reason to modify the opinion he expressed in his last letter as to the! threatening aspect of the natives in the Bay of Plenty. The occurrences of the last) few days afford a curious instance of how rapidly news is conveyed through the interior by thenatives. Yesterday we stated, from information derived from natives, that one of the causes of the agitation amongst the King Maoris in the Upper Thames was an intimation that had been received that the surveyors w. uld soon be sent to Katikiti. Our Tauranga letter published to~day gives us the fact that there has been some talk about the matter at ie Papa, and very likely during the summer we shall have an attempt to force the survey. There are some men amongst the King pa'ty who have—or think they have, which comes to pretty much tin same thing—a claim on parts of the land it is pretty certain that vve shah Parer repeliun of last summer's work, some KtO,oOp spent, not to mention five or sis men killed, in an abortive attempt to survey land, which, even if we did su vey it, would be of no use ti l it was safe for peoplcloliveonit and cultivated. TheKutika'i block is more exposed to the incursions «i the hostile natives than the land in the Tauranga district, from whidi the surveyors were driven last year. Penetaka. who is determined as ever, is resident with his people at To Whakainar.ama. It is said that the horse of the man Lewis, found dead lately on the beach between Tauranga and Maketu, bears the mark ol a bullet wound, and this h s given rise to the suspicion that Lewis lias been murdered. This fact is not confirmed, however. The only place from which danger could come is Uakaraia’s old place, TV 3’uke, or Canaan, but we have not heard of its being re-occnpied by the hostile natives. The proceedings at Opotiki are noticed elsewhere.
