Platinum; on the West Coast.—We take the following from the West Coast limes, of the llth instant:—“The exist* ence of platinum on the West Coast, and iii payable quantities, is now placed beyond all loubi, a miner having arrived in town, some few days since, with two ounces of metal, which lie disposed of to Mr Proctor, Kevell-street. The man stated that he procured it out of the beach at Jackson’s Bay, where it abounded, and that he knew of another locality Jurther on where it was yet more plaatitul, as working with a tin dish only lie could wash out from doz. to 7oz. per day. We hope to hear ! m )ra of this platinum question, as the ; establishment of anotuer mineral resource i would be of great benefit to tiie district.” | The 18th Rotal Irish.—The Wanga» nui Times of the 2ist says“ Hi* Excullency the Governor proposed to Ministers that 200 men of this Regiment should be stationed at iaurauga; 2UO at Taranaki • zOOin Auckland ; and the remainder left at Wanganui. Ho was undecided at to whether head-quarters should not be ia Wellington. Ministers declined to sanation the proposed movements, but would not oppose tne wishes of his Excellency, on the understanding that he assumed the rt-sponsibility. Whether ms Excellency will assume the responsibility or not wa cannot say ; but it is likely that despatches by the present mail will cause the disposition of the troops to be left to the discretion of Sir George Grey’s successor.
