ENGLISH COMMERCIAL,

The Panama Star and Herald, August 24, contains the following items of commercial interest; — The Bank rate has been reduced to two per cent. The change did not affect the markets as it was fully anticipated. It is believed that low rales will rule for the present, unless late in the autumn corn purchases force up the terms to three or four per cent. The large balances available for general purposes, the indisposition manifested to enter into foreign loans or speculative adventure, and the small prospect of any sudden recovery in trade, will assist to keep the general money market in an easy condition for some time to come. Not for many yeais has the bank rate been so low as it now stands. There is no activity, however, in the market.

Business in public securities is at present more animated than it has been for some time. Foreign stocks have been neglected, but are now (inner. Colonial government securities meet with fair attention.

Consols (or money, 94}-3J ; Consols for account. 94 ; India 5 percent., Ill}-} ; Mexican 3 per cent, account, 154; Peruvian, 5-85; Venezuela, 6 per cent., 1862—18 to 19; New Zealand 8 per cent., 1084—107$ ex div.; Queensland 0 per cent., 94J ex div.; Victoria (new) 6 percent., 1085-J ex div.

Tho Colonial produoo market# were inactive du-; ring the early portion of the past fortnight, owing partly to holiday movements on behalf of onr foreign visitors, and partly to the rough and unsettled weather. The last week has shown more appearance of improvement, the demand both from consumers and exporters having been on a larger scale and combined with a liberal supply of most articles, a good business has been done.

Wool shows no improvement—the stock of Colonial is very large. Australian—Clothing and combing. Is 4d to 2s 7sd; scouring, Is 4d to 2s 6sd; handwashed, Is to ls9d; lambs, Is-id to 2s 3d ; locks and pieces, 9d to Is 5d ; skin, Is 4d to Is 9d. New Zealand—9d to 2s 3d.
