Fatal Accident in the New Forest.

—On May 17, a distressing occurrence happened in tho New Forest, between Hyfhe and Beaulieu. Dr Balk, of South* amplon, and his wife and family, having taken lodgings at the former place, for change of air, Mrs Palk was induced by tho iinenoss of the morning to take a walk towards Beaulieu, accompanied by the nurse and three of her children. 'When about two miles from Hythe, one of tho children, a boy, sis years of age, commenced gathering ilowers on the edge of the deep gravel pit, containing a quantity of water, which existed to the depth of seven or eight feet. In a moment the soil gave way, and the child was precipitated into tho water. The nurse courageously jumped in to endeavor to save the child, and Mrs Palk, with a mother’s feelings, plunged in for the same purpose, but both child and nurse disappeared almost imI mediately, and Mrs Palk had the greatest difficulty in saving h.-rself from the jaws of death ; in short she was completly exhausted and was discovered in the most pitiable state by a butcher’s man, who happened to be passing the main road close by in a cart. Tho man drove as fast as he could to Hythe, for assistance, and Mr Frost, of (he Drummond Arms Hotel,, promptly harnessed a couple of swift horses to a drag, and took some men and a surgeon to the scene of disaster. Tho bodies were speedily recovered, but life was completly extinct in both eases.
