Annuai Licensing Meeting. The annual licensing meeting was held on Tuesday. the 16th. The following Justices being on the Bench : John Curling, Esq., K.M., M. Fitzgerald, Esq., J.P., and H. ;S, Xiffen, Esq., J.P. The following licences were renewed : J. Ashton, Exchange Hotel, Napier; C. Campbell, Albion Hotel, Napier; T*. Edwards, Shakespeare Hotel, Napier; J. Gill, Masonic Hotel, Napier; I. Jelfares, Crown Hotel, Napier ; K. Jetfares, Clive Hotel, Clive; P. M'Hardy, Havelock Hotel, Havelock; 0. M'lntyre, Sea View Hotel, Napier; J. M'Murray, Shamrock Hotel, Clive Hoad ; K D. Maney, Meanee Hotel, Meanee; M. M'Nalty, Commercial Hotel, Napier ; J. Marshall, H. L. Morton, Napier Hotel, Napier : T. Beynolds, Exchange Hotel, Havelock ; G H. Swan, Mac’s Hotel, Napier; F. Tuxford, Ferry Hotel, Western Spit. The

following new licensee were granted : .T' Ashton, Provincial Hotel, Meanee; A. Fletcher, London Hotel, Spit, Napier; W. Caldwell, Provincial Hotel, West Clive; H. Bankers, Ferryman's Hotel, Ferry Reserve, Western Spit, Napier. This license was opposed bj Mr Lee on the grounds that there was no necessity for the bouse, the traffic on the Western Spit being so small that the Government had refunded half the licence money of the one already existing there ; that the Ferry Reserve had been washed away; and that ihe proposed, site of the public house was partly on private property, and partly on the public road, and that it was contrary to the Act for the regulation of Ferries that a public house should be on a Government Reserve. Mr Cuff, on the other hand, argued that it was customary in the Middle Island for public houses to be built on Ferry Reserves, and conducted by the ferryman. Mr M'lntyre was reminded by the Bench that very recently he had been brought before the Court for receiving stolen property, and that the bench were very much inclined to take away his license ; that though they had acquitted him, the case was very strong against him, and that now they had been very doubtful whether or not they should renew his license. They had, however, decided to give him another chance, but he must beware how he conducted himself. The application of John Robottom, for the Native Club Hotel, was withdrawn.
