WELLINGTON. April 8, 7’50 p.m. The Southern rifle competitors only arrived in the Tararua at 8 o’clock. All the men were on the Ilutt ground by eleven. A. dispute arose as to whether four Northern men were qualified. The firing commenced under protest at two, and closed at six. Otago wins four prizes, and Canterbury one. The scores were:—Chisholm (winner of the belt): 42; Lacoy, 36; Smith, 35 ; Craigie, 35 ; Richardson (the Canterbury man) 31. Smith and Craigie fired olf their tie, and Smith won. Fourteen men competed for the prizes. The Rakaia has sailed. The number of passengers per Rakaia, from Wellington for Panama, was ninety six. She took with her 6503 ounces of gold for England. April 9. The prizes for firing were p-esented by the Governor to-day. A guard of honor |of volunteers. Present—ilr Stafford, Major Richardson, and about 200.

The Governor said it was always his wish to foster the volunteer movement, but more particularly now when the colony was denuded of troops, and we should have to depend on ourselves and oar skill in tho rifle.' He noticed improvement in the firing on that of last year, and hoped it would continue annually, Otago’s four men received warm congratulations. His Excellency leaves to-morrow for Picton.

The Hon. John Hall, Postmaster-Ge-neral, returned from Sydney on Saturday evening in the mail steamer Eakaia. The Hon. E. Stokes left Wellington yesterday in the Kakaia, en route for Europe via Panama. We understand that Mr Stokes contemplates returning to New Zealand, but the duration of his visit to the mother country is at present uncertain. Wednesday, April 10' The Governor left in H.M.S.S. Brisk at half-past ten this morning for Picton,— thence to Nelson. No news of the Mataura from Panama.
