SYDNEY. i mb Sydney Homing Herald, SGili January, reports : Wool.—The public sales held during the month have been very dull, and where sales have been I made prices have ruled about Id ft below those of greasy wool has been shipped for the May sales, chiefly on station account. A shipment of 1200 bodes, mostly fine fleeee, has been shipped from Melbourne to New York, per Isabella Hercules, which sailed on the 22nd, Being the first parcel ever sent direct from Australia to the United States, much interest is felt in the result. No wool ships have sailed hence for London since the departure of the mail steamer, on the 24th. The Colonial Empire has cleared, and sails to-morrow with one | of the largest cargoes of the season. ' Tallow.—The market has further improved, owing to a brisk local demand. There have been no shipments of any amount to foreign markets. Hides.—At last week’s public sides all offered induced brisk competition, and' prices ruled-fully I an eighth higher than previous Sales, Well cured first, heavy, are in demand, at fully 3d ft>; extra weights command-extreme rates. I Coals.—At this_port good coals are worth 14a 3d to 14s Gd wet,, alongside. At Newcastle the ruling rate is 9s 3d at the shoots. Shipments to foreign ports have been by no means heavy for some tiihe past. Breadstuffs.—The harvest season is now over , throughout the colonies, and the yield fully bears out the expectations formed earlier in the season. There has been a larger amount of cereals sown, and a larger yield than ever known before in the colonies, and instead of being dependent upon foreign supplies for the staff of life, we have ourselves become exporters. Large shipments are now going forward from Adelaide and Melbourne for the English market, and from this port a portion of opr •> surplus stock of foreign breadstuff's is going in the same direction. The arrivals daring the month have been the William Cole from San Francisco, ' with flour, which goes on to London without being landed; and the Annie L. Banfield, from Chile . via Nelson. At present this market offers no inducement to shippers either from Chile or California; all the recent imports from thence have left ( a large loss; and, so far as can be judged of the . ensuing year, nothing but large shipments of colo- 1 nial wheat to England will necessitate the receipt , of supplies from American ports. All the Chilian wheat in first hands has been cleared at'about 4s ( Gd net. Large sales of Adelaide for forward delivery have been made during the week at 5s to 5s t 2d net, closing at the latter figure. Best Adelaide flour in trade lots, commands £l3 10s to £l4; Californian, £l2 10s to £l3; the cargo of the i Australia! has been selling at the former price. Chilian, £9 10s to. £lO 10s, according to quality, <■ much of it being very inferior ; French barrel flour , meets with slow sale at 2Ss to 30s barrel. 1 Cereals.—The scarcity Of maize and the pro- 1 bable failure of a portion of the crop has given a , slight firmness to the market; but still without 1 covering cost of imports from California. A shipment, ex Crown, out of condition and rejected, was c sold by auction, at 2s Gd; sound, ex Australia!, j brought 3s Gd under the hammer. A small parcel of very prime barley was quitted at 4s Gd, but in- £ ferior from the same port m ly be liad as low as- 3s.
