THE POSTAGE IMPOSITION.
The * New Zealand Gazette,’ Ist December, contains the following general notice : General Post Office, Wellington, 30th Not., 1865. It is hereby notified for public information that the postage of letters for transmission within the Colony will be charged according to the rates undermentioned on. and after the Ist of January, 1867, under the provisions of “The Post Office Act Amendment Act, 1866.” I.—TOWN LETTERS. Posted at any Post Office within the Colony for delivery at or from, such Post Office — Not exceeding Uaif-an-ounce One Penny Exceeding half-an-ounce but not exceeding one ounce Twopence For every ounce or fraction of an ounce over one ounce Twopenee II.—COUNTRY LETTERS. Posted at any Post Office within the Colony for delivery at or from any other Post Office within the same Province— Not exceeding half-an-ounce Twopence Exceeding half-an-ounce hut not exceeding one ounce Fourpenoa For every ounce or fraction of an ounce over one ounce ... Fourpence 111.—INTER-PROVINCIAL LETTERS. Posted at any Post Office within the Colony for delivery at or from any Post Office in any other Province within the Colony— Not exceeding half-an-ounce Threepence Exceeding half-an-ounce but not exceeding one ounce Sixpence For every ounce or fraction of an ounce over one ounce ... Sixpence John Hail. It is important to remember that as the above alterations do not take effect until the Ist January, 1867, all letters and newspers posted before that date are only subjected to the present rates. Thus papers for the United Kingdom via Southampton can be posted free of charge, and via Panama for a penny stamp, for the next outgoing mail, — if posted on or before Monday, 31st December.
