MONDAY, 22nd OCTOBER, 1866. PROROGATION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

PUBLISHED EVEB.T MOKDAT AMD THURSDAY, “NDLLIDS ADDICTUS JUEAEE IN VEEBA MAGISIRI.”

After an unusually protracted session, extending over a period of ninety-eight days, (the Assembly having -been opened on the 3rd July, and prorogued on the Bth October,) during which no less than eighty-two bills have been passed, the General Assembly stands prorogued until the 27th December nest.

His Excellency having entered the Chamber, and the members of the Lower House summoned, an address was read to his Excellency by the Speaker, in which, after referring to the Colonial policy of self-defence, and the need of raising a large surplus of revenue for Provincial expenditure, which together have occasioned the necessity for additional taxation, requested bis Excellency’s assent to tho Appropriation Act.

His Excellency, after expressing his thanks for the attention members had given to their duties, and his approval of the measures passed by them, proceeded to congratulate them on the steady increase of public revenue and general progress of tbe Colony, as well as the continued tranquillity (?) of the Native districts in this Island that had been the seat of disturbance. He also indicated the intention of the Government, during the recess, to prepare a measure for the establishment of Municipal Institutions on an extensive scale throughout the Colony, and his own intention of visiting the southern portions of the Colony so as to become acquainted with its several settlements. The Speaker then declared the House prorogued till the 27th December, and his Excellency retired.
