POET OF NAPIER
Since tlie data of our ln.it summary there have boon the usual number of arrivals from tho coast, chiefly with timber, for which commodity Auckland finds our little province a good customer. The usual number of subsidised steam boats have also come and gone again,—chiefly arriving with full cargoes of general merchandise, mostly transshipped from English and Australian vessels. Of foreign arrivals wo have to note but two, ono of which was tho regular-trading brig Maggie, from Newcastle, h.S.W,, with coal, consigned to Mr J• if. On the 14th sighted the land near Newcastle, and on tho 17th entered tho harbor, —after a smart run of twelve days. Remained at Newcastle nine days, when she left for Napier on tho 26th July, with light westerly airs. Experienced strong gale from the south-east on the 28th; tho vessel had to be hovelo in consequence. Sore away for tho North Cape on the 2Sth, and made the land on tho 11th August. From tho North Cape to Portland Island, experienced strong N.V7. winds. Sighted the Island (Portland) ou the loth. Was becalmed for four days ; and brought up in the roadstead at 3 p.m. on Saturday, ISth Ausust. The Maggie sailed for Newcastle again on the 3rd inst., —Air J. H. Yautier proceeded in her as a passenger. THE LEONIDAS. The brigantine Leonidas, Captain Poole, left Melbourne on Tuesday, 7th August, with fine weather and light westerly winds, which continued till the 14th, when it suddenly changed to heaw squalls, accompanied with rain. Rounded Capa Farewell ou the ISth ; had tine weather through Cook’s Straits ; and rounded Cape Palliscr on the 21st. Next day was hove-to for 12 hours—wind very strong from the westward. The regular-trading ship Strathallun was loading for this port direct at the date of our last advices ; and the next mail will no doubt apprise us of her having sailed. The brigantine Vistula may now be hourly elected to arri to here from £>yd ney with a full cargo of merchant! iss.
Tim ship Napier, for Wellington, with a large cargv) on board for Napier, lutu not arrived up to our last advices, she being then 151 days out.
We very much regret to have to record that no tidings hare been received at Wellington of the brigantine Sea Serpent, Captain Alexander Blair which vessel left Port Waitangi, Chatham Islands, for that port, on the Bth June. It is greatly lo bo feared that this vessel has fallen a victim to the perils of the deep. In former years, the Sea Serpent used to be a regular trader to this port, and her worthy captain had gained for himself a good name among the people of Napier, who we feel sure, now view bis long absence with apprehension, and who, although fearing the worst, still hope that it is all safe with him and his gallant bark.
