NATIVE AFFAIRS.

Native affairs in our neighborhood have once more assured something of a threatening appearance. At the Wairoa there is some anxiety felt as to the intentions of a body of natives in that district known to be disaffected. And still nearer the town, at Petane, a considerable body have assembled. They are known to be rebels, and votaries of the Hauhau abomination; and are, besides, well supplied with arms and ammunition. For the present at least they are quiet, and profess to have come at the invitation, or request of Mr Donald M'Lean, to discuss their supposed grievances; and not with the intention of provoking hostilities. How far this may be true we know not, but it is certain that they are armed rebels, and that they have not scrupled to lay tribute upon the flocks of the settlers for the wherewithal to supply their commisariat. Toleration of such doings is likely to lead to bolder demonstrations on their part, and we should like to see them taught that their conduct cannot be submitted to.
