Correspondence.

*•* do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by correspondents. *,• WOKTH THUSTKING-TbOUT^ Pro the Editor of the Hawke’s Bay Times. - ] Sib, Xu the event of such n tiling ns n fire break* ing out on the Eastern Spit, what means are at our disposal to put it out? Should we have to wait till the fire-engine which is at present housed in Shakespeare-road could be brought down? This idea seems to me to be perfectly ridiculous ; but really it is the only thing people could do were a fire to occur down here at the present time. It certainly seems very strange that a place like the Eastern Spit,—daily increasing as it is in size and population,—the emporium of ail the trade and commerce of the “ Province that Browne made,” —the place whereon is concentrated all the principal stores and insurance offices of the town j— X say, it seems to me very strange that there is not a firc-eugino on the Spit; for it surely must be apparent to any observing individual that were such a public calamity as a fire to befal us hero the loss to all concerned would be tenfold greater than were the same to happen in any other part of Napier. Sir, X trust the few remarks X have made above will not be carelessly read when the damp sheets of your Thursday’s impression finds its way into the dwellings of the good people of Napier,— talked of for an honr or two, or, it may be, for a day or two, —and then forgotten!—to be remembered again perhaps some fine night when our peaceful slumbers are rudely disturbed by hearing the ominous words, “ fire ! fire !! ” Wo require a fire-eugino on the Spit; a fire-bell too, but the latter is not so necessary as the former. Let our Eire Brigade see to this: it is their duty. Let the public sec to it: for is it not their duty also ?—X am, &c.. Eastern Spit, Aegus. sth September, 1866.
