THE THEATRE.
Last Tuesday night the performances at the above popular place of amusement were for the benefit of the talented stage manager, Mr W. H. Newton. The weather was unpropitious, but not withstanding that, the attendance was not so bad as might have been expected. The piece selected was one of Shakespeare’s greatest literary efforts—- “ Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” The play itself is a perfect manual of philosophy; aud the comprehension of it has been well called “ the history of a man’s own mind.” Of course Mr Newton appeared as “ Hamlet,” and performed this most difficult character with great precision. The other characters were also well rendered by tho members of tho company. On Thursday night, “ Charles 11., or tho Merry Monarch,” came off with great success before a well-filled house. This performance was for tho benefit of Mr and Mrs Sefton. A very pleasant evening was wound up by an amusing farce. On Saturday night Mr W. H. Eeed, tho cotnio member of the talented corps dramatique, took his benefit. Tho piece selected was “ The Mowers of the Forest, —a Gipsy Story 5 ” and was well rendered. Tho attendance was capital. _ To-morrow evening, “KatharinaandPetrucio,” (in other words, “ Taming of the Shrew,”) will bo produced—the performances to be for tho benefit of Mrs W. H. Foley and Mr Vernon Webster. This play is another of the many masterly efforts of tho “ man Shakespeare; ” and judiag from the past performances at the Theatro Eoyal, we may look forward to a most intolectual evening’s amusement. Mrs Foley and Mr Webster have contributed much to the enjoyment of the Hawke’s Bay public during their stay in tho town ; and we trust to see a bumper house on this, tho occasion of their benefit.
