APPLE BLOSSOMS. sunlight lies golden on the hill, 'll hilo the balmy southern breeze Brings on its breath a fragrance From the blossoming apple trees. Sweet olden memories come to me With the scent of the apple bloom. And I see you sitting, cousin Nanne, Inhaling their sweet perfume. Just where you sat ten years ago. Half buried in orchard green. The wind just rippling your auburn hair. And kissing your cheek’s fair sheen. No violet ever had bl >er eyes. Whose honey the wild bee sips; No cherry ever had rarer red Than bloomed on your crimson Ups. Our harks have drifted far apart On the sea of life since then, And never more, ’mid tempest or calm May sail together again. ’ And yet I remember the old school-house Where wo bent over our book. Or waded togetner below the hill With naked feet in the brook. I remember the hill where the school-house stood. Where the trees and grape vine swing; Where we slid down-hill in the winter time. And gathered flowers in spring. We had our dreams, like other girls • We built our castles fair; ’ But our dreams they faded, as other dreams fade. • Ami our castles were built in the air X wonder if you think of old times, Nanne, When you feel the soft spring breeze, If thoughts of your old friend come to you W ith the scent of the apple trees.
