RECOVERY OF THE GOLD STOLEN FROM THE STEAMER BARWON.

(From the Nelson Colonist, 22ud June.) The 1000 ounces of gold stolen from the steamer Barwon, has been found at Sydney. The man accused of stealing it, told the gaoler who went into the same cell as a prisoner, that the gold was bid in a dust heap close beside where the steamer was lying. On making search the gold was found there, and all recovered within a few grains. The Sydney Empire, of June 9, says:—“The gold recovered on Thursday evening was removed yesterday from the Detective Office to the Sydney Mint, where it underwent the process of washing, to separate it from the earthy matter aud other rubbish, with which it had become intermixed on account of the bags decaying. , A large quantity of stuff was, washed by detective Elliot and Mr Marsh, agent of the Barwon steamer. Though the whole of the debris had not been finally washed when the Mint closed at 4 o’clock, Mr Marsh is satisfied that to a few grains the whole of the gold Has been recovered. We can add little to our report of yesterday announcing the discovery, further than it was the male prisoner, and not the stewardess, who confided the secret of its whereabouts and pointed it out to those concerned.”
