LATER FROM THE CAPE COLONY.
Through the courtesy of Mr Benstead we (Southern Cross) have the Advertiser and Mail, published at Capo Town, on the sth of April. We make the following extracts :—■
The news from the Free State by the post to-day is by no means as satisfactory as had been anticipated. Moshesh has not .abdicated, and is not prepared to accept the severe terms of peace stipulated by the Free State authorities in September last; Nehemiah, his son, professes anxiety to be received with his people as Free State subjects, and Molappo likewise professes a pacific disposition; but Makwaai and Letsea are decidedly opposed to the conditions prescribed ; while Molitzane is determined to fight to the last. The result of all this is that the armistice has ceased, the hostages have been returned, and hostilities have been apparently resumed as actively as ever. The steamer Ruabiae, from England, is now daily expected. The French barque Yille de St. Leu, from Canton to Havannah, with 250 Chinese coolies, put into Table Bay yesterday for supplies.
The Spanish war ship Santa Maria put into Simon’s Bay yesterday for supplies. She is from Manilla, January 29, and Aujer, 17th February, bound to Cadiz.
The wreck of the Runnymede, now lying full fathoms five, has been sold for £153 ; R. Metelerkamp, brother to Oudo Bass, of Zourbron, formerly au M.L.C., of whom any council or community might be jircud, and W. Frames, of Port Elizabeth, were the purchasers. The cargo still supposed to be in her is rougiily estimated at £BO,OOO. Frames goes to work at once with his divine bell, and great results are looked for. — Great Eastern.
