MAORI GROG.

[To tUe Editor of the Hawke’s Bay Times.] Sie, —I recently saw a paragraph in the * Herald,’ in which it was stated the natives in this district had found out the way of making grog witn peach, quince, plums, &c. It is true that they do manufacture a liquor by means of the above 5 but I think I may state that it is not that which causes so many of them to be drunk nearly every day of their lives. Your readers must understand that there are certain ways and means by which the Maoris can obtain grog on paying for it. It is the grog they get in this way that makes them drunk; for were any one to drink a gallon of the other stuff, they would not be in that state. It would no doubt make a person sick, for it is abominable rubbish. —I am, &c., ONE WHO KNOWS. Poverty Bay, 12th May, 1863.
