THE WEST COAST GOLD FIELDS. (From the Nelson Colonist, 6th April.)
The Kennedy arrived on Wednesday from the Grey, with, 3,500 ounces of gold from that river. By the Wdnga Wonga yesterday we have latest papers from the Grey and Hokitika. The miners are still rushing to the Little Grey, in spite of the efforts of the Warden to stop them, as the report of 2 and 3 dwts. to the shovelful turns out to bo a Maori report, with the usual exaggeration about it. The papers, although still believing in the locality, and getting fair reports from it, advise caution as to proceeding but it appears without effect, the hundreds who have heard of it seeming determined to try for themselves.
The Tararua sailed from Hokitika with 15,000 ounces of gold for Sydney. The somewhat unwarranted rush to Bruce Bay, which arose on a prospecting claim that set forth a description of a gully capable of giving ground to about 250 men, has had rather a disastrous result. This was only what might have been looked for, considering that about 1500 miners followed Hunt, the prospector, making very great threats, indicative of something much akin to lynching in case the ground were not produced. After a severe march through the bush and across difficult creeks and streams, Hunt suddenly disappeared ; and after a weary search and much strong language and curses on Hunt’s head, the disappointed men returned to Bruce Bay township, where occurred a scene of outrage and appropriation and destruction of property, which, if it be as described, is simply a disgrace to the mass of miners who took part in robbing the storekeepers who supply them with that without which the gold they seek could never be obtained.
