THURSDAY, BTH FEBRUARY, 1866.

“JitJLLXCS ADDICTU9 JCEAXX TIRBi MAOISTS!.’’

HAWKE’S BAY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY A Society, bearing the above designation, was formed in this Province between two and three years ago, and for a time it promised to be successful in promoting the excellent objects for which it was formed, —several of the settlers of Hawke’s Bay entering with enthusiasm into the project, and taking steps to forward its ends by the importation of valuable specimens of cattle, sheep, &c., as well as by well-directed attempts at improveraent in the breeding of stock already in their possession. It was amongst the objects of this Association to bold an annua! exhibition of the agricultural and pastoral resources of the Province j but we believe that the Society did not succeed in its attempt to get up the first of these exhibitions, and the consequence of this failure was an apathetic feeling in the minds of its members, as though the project were hopeless; and, up to the present time there seems to have been but little done—the members falling off and its affairs exhibiting a general state of confusion. Since that time Hawke’s Bay has mateiially advanced, and it has been felt that the time was come in which the Society might be resuscitated with great advantage to the agricultural interests of the Province, and accordingly a meeting was called by advertisement on Saturday last, in the Council Chamber, and which took place at three p.m. His Honor the Superintendent being in the chair, it was explained by Mr Tiffen that, according to the ninth rule of the Society, which provides that members failing to pay up their subscriptions by a certain date should cea e to retain their membership, the Society had virtually ceased to exist, as there were bnt five persons remaining who were members of the Association. It was, therefore, considered best to commence de novo by the construction of another Society. The following was the business transacted at the meeting;—

Moved by Mr Botspield, »econded by Mr Rhodes ;

“ That the existing rules of the Society be an* nulled.”

Moved by Mr H. S. TIFPEI?, seconded by Mr J. Rhodes :

“That a new agricultural Association bo formed, and the following gentlemen appointed as committee ; —Messrs M’Lean, Ormond, Powdrell, Tanner, H. R. Russell, Capt Russell, Heslop, Canning, J. G. Gordon, Grant, Bousfleld, and the mover.”

Moved by Mr J. Habddto, seconded by Mr TIFFEN ;

“ That tho next show of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural Society be held at Havelock, and that clauses 6,7, and Bof the last year’s rules, with respect to fences, sheds, and pens, be put into force.”

Mr Richardson proposed, Mr Hesiop seconded:—

“ That Mr J. Rhodes be appointed Treasurer.” Mr Chambers moved, MpTxfpbx seconded “ That Messrs V. Janisch and G. E. G. Richardson be appointed Auditors, to examine accounts every half year.” Mr Chambers moved

“ That the next show bo held on the 21st March. Yards to be closed to stock and opened to judges at 10 a.m. open to tho public at 12 noon.” Moved by Mr H. S. Tipped, seconded by Mr J. Rhodes :

“ That a meeting of subscribers be held on the 3rd March next to receive the report of the Committee."

—»We believe that the new Society starts under the most favorable auspices, and that it will succeed in its objects, which we heartily wish it may do. Its management is placed in good hands, which we are sure will leave no effort untried for this end; and we trust it will receive that support from the general public which undoubtedly its promoters have a right to expect when the great benefits it is calculated to confer on the Province is taken into consideration.
