The Hawke's Bay Times.

NAPIER, MONDAY, Bth JANUARY, 1866.

News of the Day.

“NCELIUS ADDICIC3 JUHARK IN* VEKBA MAGISTBI."

A pressure of other matter this morning compels us to shut out our usual leading article.

WAIRO A.—Sunday, 7th Janxtaut. News of importance from Wairoa there is none : —that tlie Hau-haus had fled, it was supposed ia the direction of Waikato, —and (hat friendly natives were floeking in from all quarters, to aid the Government in pursuing their supcrstitous brethren, —forming the most interesting item.'. The body of a man named Pal on, who was drowned some lime since, had been found. We may give the following as a rumor :—That the tribe of natives known as the Uriweras had sent a challenge to Paora Ilerepu, ot Mohakf*„ to come out and fight them j but that the latter, owing to his having no men, had refused! We cannot vouehe for this, and at the same time doubt its truth, but we give it for what it is worth. AtrcEtAOT).—-From Auckland we have papers to the 4th inst., but they contain no news of great interest.—The annual race meeting had come off very successfully on the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd inst.—The alleged niurderor of the Finnigan family, James Stack, a discharged soldier of 65th Regiment had been captured. Previous to his being caught, an inquest had been held on the bodies, and a verdict of " Wilful Murder" returned against Stack.—The head-qunrters of the gallant 70th had left for England in the Ida Zeigler, on the 4th inst., and the remainder were to follow in the Siam, on the 6th (last Saturday.) —Want of space compels us to hold over the aaarkvt reports aud other '.xtratts.

Names and Sydney.—We would draw the attention of the mercantile community to an advertisement in another column, announcing that the brig Moggie will sail for Sydney on the 15th inst., and that she wi!l>ontinue in the trade. The advisability of promoting direct communication with the Australian Colonies must be obvious to all, and we trust that every encouragement will be iliven to our enterprising fellow-townsman Mr J. H. Vautier, in his efforts to bring about this much-to-be-desired result. Surveyors.—A General Government Gazette, published on the 30th ult., contains a .notification to the effect that S. Locke, Esq., and W. Ellison Esq., had been granted licenses to act as surveyors under the Native Lands Act, 1865. Almanac.—We have to acknowledge receipt of a very creditable sheet almanac issued from the "Wellington Independent office. General Election.—The Nelson Colonist, of the 26th ult, contains the following :—“ We believe that writs for the general election will be issued in the course of the present week, in which case the business and bustle of electioneering will very shortly bo upon us." ° Prize Firing.—Wo would again remind our readers that the prize shooting commences at the Old Rifle Range This Day.—We would also draw attention to the fact of au error having appeared in the advertisement fixing the day for Nos. 5, 6, and 7, Companies to fire. I* was “ Thursday! ISth January,’ 1 whereas it should have been “Tuesday, 16th January.” It appears in'a corrected form this morning. Auction Sale.—Mr John Stuart will sell tomorrow, (Thursday,) at the residence of Mr J. M. Smart, Ben More, Napier, all that gentleman’s households effects, cows, horses, &c., &o. The sale to commence at ten a m. (See advertisement.) Napier Annual Races.—A reference to our advertising columns will show that the above are announced to take place at Greenmeadows on the Ist and 2nd March next. From what we can hear of horses in training, &c., we may prophesy a good “meet” for 1836.
