THE MAORI PRISONERS.—WHERE ARE THEY ?
TO TKEEDITOU OP THE TIMES, Sxe,—May I ask you whether there is any truth or foundation in the current report that Mr M‘Lean, at the representation of one of our Heretaunga chiefs, let the- prisoners taken at the affair at Pukemaire, and other recent engagements on the East Coast —among: whom, was that well-known scoundrel, “ Black Bob" freeP And, if so, whether their surrender was unconditional ? An j information you can give en the subject will, I am sure, be very acceptable to- the public at large.— I am, &c., Enqtjihee. Napier, 2nd December, 186 S; [We are unable to give our correspondent any definite information on the subject. A report did reach us a few days ago that the Superintendent, at the request (demand ?) of the chief Karaitiana, did let some of the prisoners go; but we have heard nothing further of it since ; and trust that such is not the case.— Ed.
