THE SOUTH.
By the Lord Ashley, on Saturday, we have our usual files from the Southern Provinces. The body of the unfortunate Mr C. Broughton, who it will be remembered had been missing for rome time from Wanganui, had been discovered. The Chronicle of the 18th inst., says:— “On the 15th a party of soldiers found the body of our unfortunate townsman east up on tbe beacb, about a mile and a half from the mouth of the Patea. It was so much decomposed that there would have been some difficulty in identifying but for a peculiarity in one of the front teeth and a ring on one of the fingers. There were three tomahawk cuts on the back of the head. The body was interred near where it was found. It is supposed that Mr Broughton must have been taken to the Whakapaiho pa which overhangs the river before being murdered, and that then his body has been thrown into the river.” The body of Captain Ralph Sleigh, who, our readers will remember, was accidentally drowned at Wellington a short tune ago, had been interred with military honors on Tuesday, the 14th inst. Dr. Featherston and W. W. Taylor, Esq., have intimated that they do not intend coming forward again for seat in the House of Representatives for theClty of Wellington. The Independent regrets their decision very much; and mentions the names of Messrs Boriase, Hunter and Pearce as likely candidates.
