Sudden Death.—On Thursday afternoon, Mr Kendall, a partner of Mr Tetley, butcher, In* gostre-street, while playing in the cricket match between the Victoria and Wellington eleven, suddenly fell down dead. At the time of his terrible ■ummons, ho was standing at the wickets, having just made a run. At first, the players, and the ?>eople gathered to view the match, thinking that le had, as is often the case, lain down to take a Test while the field were responding to the umpires call of “ over ’’ did not pay much attention, but when the play was about to be resumed and he did not stir, Mr Bromley, one of the umpires, went to the wickets and discovered that he was breathing heavily and gasping. Dr Boor, the other umpire, was called for, and by his advice, everything possible was done to restore animation but without avail, and at last it was too evident that the vital spark had fled. Such a melancholy occurrence of course broke up the match for the time, and the body was conveyed to the marquee pitched on the ground, until the arrival of a carriage to remove it from the spot. An inquest was held at the White swan Hotel, Cuba-street, st noon, yesterday before Dr Boor and a respectable Jury, when an iraediate verdict was returned of “Died by the visitation of God." We understand that the deceased will be buried to morrow with military honors, and the Volunteer company will follow bis body to the grave. —Wellington Independent, lith November. A Mistake. —It has several times been stated that Te tJa, tho great high-priest and prophet of Pai Marirism, was amongst those taken prisoners by the Arawas under Mr Mair at Te Teko Pa. That is not the case, To Ua being, it is supposed, at Taranaki. This mistake has perhaps arisen through Te Ua being confounded with Te Uwhi, a man more villainous but less fanatical. —Southern Cross, Bth November.
