Geand Review.— By the s.s. Queen on Thursday last, from Auckland, arrived Major-General Chute, with Colonels Gamble and Spain. The opportunity thus afforded was taken advantage of to review the troops stationed at Napier. Accordingly on Friday morning at 6 o’clock the detachment, under the command of Colonel Mulock, C. 8., consisting of 6 captains, 12 subalterns, 25 sergeants, 16 drummers, and 450 rank and file, with the splendid band of the 70th Regiment, proceeded to Clive-squaro, and wore drawn up at 7 o’clock, ready to receive the General. They “ marched past ” in slow and quick time, and went through a series of field exercises—returning to barracks at a quarter to 9 a.m. The affair, with the exception of one slight mistake, was all that could be desired. Major-General Chute and suite re-embarked for Wellington, in the Queen, on the evening of the same day. Me Vernon Webster.— By advertisement in another column it will be seen that Mr Vernon Webster takes his benefit at the Masonic Hall on the evening of Tuesday next, the 21st inst., previous to a trip in the country. Well aware as waare of the manner in which this gentleman’s efforts to afford gratification to the Hawke’s Bay public are we feel that we need only make the above announcement to ensure a full attendance at the Hall on that occasion. Sincethe arrival of the Company in Napier—some five weeks since—Mr Webster has ably sustained several aeknowledgedly difficult characters, amongst which we may enumerate Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello, and has invariably succeeded in culling forth the plandits of the audience, and fully sustaing his well-earned reputation as a first-clasa performer. W© feel sure that the Hawke’s Bay public will confirm our verdict by a crowded bouse Oa th# occasion of his benefit. - ■
