THE PANAMA SERVICE.

DEFEAT OF THE ATTEMPT TO ALTER . THE POET OF CALL. As urn anticipated, the attempt, to alter the port o£pall in New Zealand for the Panama steamers, has proved a failure. The House, by 24 to 18, refused, at the bidding of an Auckland faction, hacked by some of the Otago members, to stultify itself by re-opening a question which had already been finally sealed by the Act of the legislature. A'more useless debate than that of Tuesday night, it is impossible to conceive. The supporters of Mr Graham’s motion, and those "who voted for Mr Macandrew’s amendment, had really no case whatever. That there were no good grounds for tile motion itself, was clearly proved by the able and conclusive speech of the Postmas’er-Generhl, while Mr Macandrew’a proposal to refer tae whole subject to a Select Committee was shown to be altogether uncalled for. We refer our readers to the full report of the debate which appears elsewhere. Its perusal will convince those who may hare had any doubts on the subject, that the choice of Wellington as the Port of Call, was the most suitable that could have been made for the benefit of the Colony a large.—Wellington Independent, 31st August.
